Arepas, for the uninitiated, are cornmeal cakes stuffed with cheese or other things.
At La Calle Arepas Bar in Norwalk, we are trying their best.
Carne Asada Especial Arepa
Just listen to this ingredient list: grilled steak, shredded cabbage, tomato, shredded semi-hard cheese, salsas.
What can’t be good?
The corn shells are crisp and pleasantly lack the mealy taste and feel you too often get.
Inside, the filling is somewhat dry and could benefit from additional sauce.
There’s a slaw-like addition that somewhat helps with the dryness.
Unfortunately, the steak is the weakest link–lacking in flavor and slightly overcooked.
The only benefit to the steak is it breaks apart easily, so you don’t drag the fillings out when you bite.
Maybe there is a better arepa here, especially with the cornmeal cakes, but this is not it.
