Song Restaurant in West Hartford is part of a restaurant group including Han Hotpot and Shu.
While Shu has possible the best dumplings in Connecticut (see here) let’s see what Song has to offer.
Pork Soup Dumplings
These SHOULD have a gelatinous soup inside.
Instead, they are almost dry.
The flavor is chalky, not sure how that happens.
Overall, a very underwhelming experience.
The Rating: Pork Soup Dumplings
Vegetable Lo Mein
Instead of a dynamic dish, this is mostly oil and soy sauce.
Nothing noteworthy about this dish.
It is food, plain.
The Rating: Vegetable Lo Mein
Initially off-putting with an overwhelming Sichuan pepper and that chalky taste again.
There is also a spiciness that is directed at heat not flavor.
But then, you keep eating, as the sauce hooks you a bit more.
Still not great, but better.

Potatoes in Sichuan Sauce
So we got these to go, which may be important here.
Because these do not travel well, they get soggy very quickly.
Hopefully in-house they are crispy.
The flavor is spicy and umami-rich.
Not bad to go, maybe better.
The Rating: Potatoes in Sichuan Sauce
Pancake with Pork
The flavor is heavily influenced by cabbage, scallions, and pepper, overshadowing the pork.
The exterior is pleasingly crispy, which is nice.
This is a good option if you’re craving a crunchy, veggie-forward dish.
The Rating: Pancake with Pork
Cold Sesame Noodles
A well-balanced dish with nice, subtle spice and overall pleasing flavors.
A standout among the noodle offerings, considering of how boring the vegetable lo mein was.
The Rating: Cold Sesame Noodles
Fried Pork Dumplings
These deliver a satisfying fried flavor with deep umami notes, even without dipping sauce.
The sauce is fine, neither adding nor subtracting to the expeience.
These are a solid choice for dumpling enthusiasts.
The Rating: Fried Pork Dumplings
While Song Restaurant offers a variety of dishes, the quality fluctuates, with some dishes standing out more than others, but nothing great.
