On the search for the best pizza in Connecticut brings us to Modern Apizza in New Haven.

Pizza in Connecticut is top tier.

It’s not until you leave the northeast and the few pockets around the U.S. (Chicago…) or some phenomenal places in other states that you start to realize we are spoiled.

Spoiled rotten.

Only NYC might have consistently higher quality pizza.

So finding the best in Connecticut is difficult, but finding excellent pizza in CT? That’s easier.

Enter Modern Apizza.

Not the most famous in Connecticut.

Not the most famous in New Haven.

But damn good.

The secret to the pizza here is the crust.

The sauce is actually very bland. It mostly just tastes like crushed tomatoes.

The cheese is solid. It could be better, but it adds a neutral balanced flavor.

Toppings: The toppings are inconsistent. I got pepperoni and mushroom.

The pepperoni was wonderful, charred slightly on the rim.

The mushrooms, however, had a canned quality to them.

Sometimes that’s okay, but not here.

The star of this pizza is, without a doubt, the crust.

The crust has this amazing char to the bottom, and the sides, and even on top.

It’s very thin yet dense and has a strong taste of flour.

It makes for a compact and chewy package to hold things together.

Top-tier pizza.

The rating:

With it’s phenomenal crust and solid cheese, this pizza is way up there in consideration for the best pizza in CT. The inconsistent toppings and bland sauce are all that’s holding it back.

8.5/10
