On the search for the best grilled cheese in Connecticut brings us to NV Bakery & Market in Waterford, where we instead find an amazing Tomato Soup.

Like other grilled cheese restaurants, NV Bakery boasts a dozen or two different types of Grilled Cheese.

But when hunting down the best grilled cheese, you need to choose a sandwich where the main ingredient is cheese.

If your sandwich has a bunch of stuff on it that end up being more than the cheese, you are no longer eating a Grilled Cheese.

You are eating a Melt.

Like a Patty Melt, or a Tuna Melt.

A Grille Cheese has more cheese than anyhting else.

So many of the sandwiches on offer here are actually Melts.

But we went with the classic and one that can still be considered a grilled cheese.

Mozzarella Stick Grilled Cheese
An overload in every sense – the basil is overpowering, breadcrumbs on the bread create an odd texture, and the tomatoes are excessive.

It’s an ambitious concept that unfortunately misses the mark.

Basic Grilled Cheese
Uses margarine, which might contribute to the bread getting soggy inside despite a nice crisp exterior.
However, it still manages to be a satisfying classic.

Okay, so the grilled cheeses here are good.

Nothing exceptional, but good.

But then there is the tomato soup…

Tomato Soup
A delightful blend of roasted, creamy tomato flavor without an overuse of herbs.

The first sound out of your mouth when you eat this is “mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm”.

It just tastes so good.

The roasted tomato flavor is what really carries this soup.

It stands out for its pure and comforting taste.
