On the search for the best grilled cheese in Connecticut brings us to Toast + Tonic Creative Kitchen in Mystic Village.

Comfort food is big in Winter 24, bigger than normal.

The best comfort food is warm, homey, and easy to make.

Maybe something you made for yourself as a kid.

Few dishes fit the idea of comfort food more than a grilled cheese.

Toast + Tonic Creative Kitchen centers itself around the grilled cheese, which they call Toasted Cheese (the ‘Toast’ in the name).

Let’s see how it stacks up.

Toasted Cheese, Classic

This is a grilled cheese.

The cheese blend is very good.

So is the bread, it is very crusty, almost like a sourdough.

The thing holding this grilled cheese back is the toasting method.

Here they use oil (most likely olive oil), which is find but doesn’t add much of what you need to the taste.

The Rating: Toasted Cheese, Classic

7/10

But what really stands out is what comes alongside the classic toasted cheese…

Tomato soup
You can’t think of this like a soup.

It is more of a compote, really.

Super chunky, chewy even.

The flavor is very bright and sharp.

Extremely acidic.

On it’s own it is great. It works well with the cheese too.

Definitely not to be missed.
