On the search for the best fine dining in Connecticut brings us to Maggie’s tavern at Winvian Farm.

As a warning, this is on gated property and you need a reservation to enter.
The restaurant is in a Relais & Chateau, which is an international chain of hotels that are incredibly fancy and quite expensive.
At Relais & Chateau’s, you tend to always stay on property (like a resort), and for some reason at every one I’ve been to they are really into having you go on walks on their property. This place is no different.
This is their lunch menu, which I wanted to use as an entry to see what the quality of food is like.
Bread and Butter
Normally I wouldn’t review something like bread and butter, but they made a big deal about where the bread came from and what kind of butter it is.
This should set up your expectation for what this restaurant is like.
Because it’s literally just bread and butter.

Risotto Balls
These balls of risotto, fried, are good.
They are perfectly cooked, with a crisp outside and everything juicy on the inside.
It is a little light on flavor, with only a hint of truffle and a generic parmesan cheese on top.

Maggie’s Burger
The burger is fine.
The patty was very thin and overcooked.
There is a good flavor to the beef, but not much else.
The fries are straight McDonald’s fries.
Something about this whole setup, given the fanciness of the place, feels like they don’t care or aren’t trying.

Chocolate Mousse with Blueberry Compote and Brittle
Not bad overall.
The flavor was, again, light.
The most standout flavor was actually a burned sugar on the brittle.
It’s good overall, just not enough.

The Recommendation: You can probably skip this place. The whole of the meal felt like they weren’t really trying with the food. They either put all their effort into dinner, and don’t care about lunch, or they are relying on their brand name to carry it through. Either way, it’s fine dining.
